Milani Holos – AKA: Why Did I Only Buy Two Of Them?!
Today I’ve got a few holographic polishes to show you all! I don’t own very many holos at the moment but they are quickly becoming one of my favorite finishes. The things that holographic polish does in the sun are downright spectacular. I’ve got two from the Milani 3D Holographic collection today. They’re not super strong holos like something you’d see from Nfu-Oh, but I still enjoy them.
For those not familiar with holographic polishes, there are two distinct types currently available. You have your linear holos (smooth prismatic vertical line) and your scattered holos (dispersed prismatic effect across the nail). For more information and examples of the different types, makeuptalk.com has a great reference article. Linear holos tend to appear dull and one-dimensional under indoor lighting, while scattered holos will still display the holographic effect inside. Both linear and scattered holos are best viewed with natural sunlight.
I used CND Sticky/Seche Vite for both swatches. Some pictures were taken with flash so you could see the holo effect better. It was probably 3am when I was painting the nails so natural sunlight wasn’t really an option.
First up is Hi-Tech, a gorgeous light green scattered holo that also has a very subtle linear holo effect in some lighting. This was 3 coats.
You can see the slight linear effect in this picture, this was taken under my “daylight” lamp and lightbox setup.
Here’s a picture with flash. I ended up using Hi-Tech as a pedicure the next day when I went to the beach and this polish was FABULOUS in the sun. My roommate and I were infatuated, my boyfriend… liked it but he was not quite as enthralled as we were. Well, at least he tries to humor me.
Hi-Res is definitely a member of the scattered holo family. Even inside and with no flash you can see the holo effect in this photo. This was also 3 coats.
Hi-Res is a really pretty lilac purple color. Here it is under the flash.
One more flash photo. I would love to get another sunny day to put these on again and take them outside for some day time pictures.
I am really impressed that such great holos are available at the drug store. I am however kicking myself for not buying all of them because we don’t have a CVS where I live. I only wish that the holo-goodness was as noticeable inside as it is under flash or natural sunlight, but this kind of dilemma comes with holo territory.
