Essie Fall 2011 Brand New Bag Collection (swatches & review)
I hope everyone is having a great week so far! My boyfriend is three days away from moving across the country for school so my emotions are all over the map this week, lol! On the plus side, I get to go with him and his mom to help him move down to Arizona so it’ll be a nice (LONG) road trip and I’ll get one extra week with him since we’re staying until October 7th or 8th. Plus now I’ll have somewhere warm to visit when we start getting pounded with endless snow this winter. ^_^
My roommate (a recently created polish fanatic, mostly my fault… no regrets!) came home with the Essie Fall 2011 Brand New Bag collection mini-cube 4pc set the other day, and she was gracious enough to let me swatch it for the blog. The only colors I will not be showing today are Glamour Purse and Case Study since they were not included in the mini-cube. You can see wonderfully represented swatches of those two colors done by Eugenia over at Ommorphia Beauty Bar.
All swatches today are done with Sally Hansen Nail Quencher base coat and Seche Vite top coat unless otherwise noted.
Lady Like is a neutral dusty rose creme with grey undertones. It was a little on the thick side but it evened itself out quite nicely. This is two coats, and this is the only swatch where I used Pro-FX Quick Dry top coat. Kelly at Posh for Polish did a really great review on this top coat, you can check it out [HERE].
Very Structured surprised me when I put it on. In the bottle it looks a lot more red, but on the nail it’s a lovely burnt sienna brown creme. This is two coats. I wasn’t sure how much I would like this one since I rarely wear brown polish, but it’s quite lovely and perfect for fall.
Carry On is a deep burgundy (almost black) creme, this is two coats. I think this one had the easiest formula to work with, it was a lot thinner than the other polishes in this mini-cube set.
Here’s a picture of Carry On taken with camera flash. The purple color really comes out now, it’s quite gorgeous. ^_^
And now the most intriguing color of the collection, Power Clutch. This color baffles me. Sometimes I look at it and I only see a very muted green. Other times I see a grey with green undertones. Basically it makes me feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Regardless of what color it is, I really really like it!
This is two coats. Application for this one was a bit tricky. I don’t know if it was just a defect but the brush on the bottle of Power Clutch I swatched was extremely stiff and refused to spread out. I had to use a lot more strokes and do quite a bit of cleanup afterward to make things look neat again.
Here’s a photo taken with camera flash, I think it highlights the green base in Power Clutch really well.
I was a little underwhelmed by this collection as a whole. This is a very neutral heavy collection (including the two colors I did not swatch today) and not something I would normally pick out of the lineup for myself. Carry On would be gorgeous if it was the lovely shade that is shown in my picture with flash, but 90% of the time it just looks black to me. I really liked Power Clutch though, it combines grey and green which are two of my favorite polish colors. And I’m surprised at how much I enjoyed Very Structured because it’s definitely not a typical “Rie” color! Overall, this is not a horrible collection. They all had great pigmentation and were opaque in two coats. If you’re a neutral polish fan then I would definitely recommend this collection to you.
