We’re on Day 2 of the 31 Day Challenge 2012 that I’m doing with Sam and Cris, and today’s focus is orange nails! I’m SUPER excited with how this one turned out so I’ll just move right along and let the photos speak for themselves. That and it’s 2am and I’m sleepy.
Get ready for some photo-heavy amazingness!
31DC2012 Day 2 – Orange Nails
Koi Nails!! Yes, there’s some white in there but OMG I totally love these! I’m sad that I only get to sport them for a day before I have to do my Day 3 nails. I first fell in love with this manicure when I discovered Mimi and her blog Makeup Withdrawal. Mimi does SUCH amazing manicures and her nails are to die for!
I started off with one thin coat of Milani White On The Spot as my underwear. Then I added two coats of Orly Au Champagne and let that dry for a few minutes. After that I sporadically added on splotches of Wet n Wild Creepy Pumpkin. Finally I used Wet n Wild Black Creme to add the koi fish stamps to each of my nails. If you check out Mimi’s post that I linked to above it’ll give you more details on the stamp I used. I think I’m gonna use it again for tomorrow’s nails, it has so many fun patterns! ^_^
And here’s some macro shots of my little fishies. It really looks so much like koi fish! ♥
That’s it for today! I hope you enjoyed this manicure as much as I enjoyed creating it! Don’t forget to head over to Sam and Cris’s blogs to see their Day 2 looks! And I’ll see you all tomorrow for Day 3 of the challenge (and my birfday )!!
Happy Wednesday Everyone!
I can’t believe this is the last day of the 31 Day Challenge!! It’s gone by so fast, and it’s been amazing sharing this experience with two bloggers I’ve admired even before I had my own blog! It’s been great having Cris and Sammy to run ideas by, share frustrations with, and shoot endless tweets to my heart’s content. This challenge forced me to push my boundaries and gave me a new love and appreciation for nail art! I loved it before, but I love it even more now that I know I’m not horrible at it. So I’ll pretty much cherish this fo-evah! If you missed any of the previous days, I have them all tucked away [HERE] for you to view them at a glance. ^_^
For the last day we wanted to do something extra special. Our challenge for Day 31 was to re-create our favorite challenge. So we each picked out a mani from the other two girls that we loved and did our best to recreate the looks. ^_^
Day 31: Re-Create Your Favorite Challenge (Sammy – Studded Nails)
Sammy did this kick-ass mani for her Day 25: Inspired By Fashion look. She took the inspiration from the Studded Sheath Dress by Michael Kors. As soon as I saw this on her nails I was in love and I knew I had to recreate it for today’s challenge . It reminds me of sexy studded black boots or a slick leather belt. ♥
I marched my butt down to the local Michael’s Arts & Crafts store and managed to find the little gold studs/bullion (in the scrapbooking section), brought ‘em home and went to work. I used Wet n Wild’s Black Creme as my base. Sam also wrote a great FAQ that helped me out a lot when I recreated this manicure.
I really REALLY love this manicure. I didn’t wear mine for the whole day since I still had another mani to create, but I’ll definitely be sporting this edgy design in the future. Thanks Sam for this awesome idea! ♥♥
Day 31: Re-Create Your Favorite Challenge (Cris – Animal Print)
How cool is this?! Cris did this beautiful gradient manicure for her Day 13: Animal Print nail challenge. I love the vibrant colors and the hint of holographic sparkle. I wish I owned a pair of the awesome technicolor flip-flops in her post, those things are awesome! Is anyone else reminded of Lisa Frank from back in the day?
I didn’t have the exact same polishes that Cris used but I did my best trying to keep things in the same color family. I used a LOT of different colors for this manicure and I spaced out when it came to writing them down. Since I don’t have INM Northern Lights Hologram top coat I ended up using China Glaze’s Wireless Holographic top coat instead, so the holo shimmer is finer in my mani. I also NEED the m78 plate in my life! I used my m57 plate for this manicure.
Macro shots of my two favorite color transitions. You’re gonna want to enlarge these two. Actually, backtrack to the first picture of the studded mani and enlarge all these photos ’cause they’re all splendiferous.
And there you have it, the end of the 31 Day Challenge! It’s going to take me some time to get used to regular swatching and reviews now that I’m done, hah! I want to thank everyone that watched me go through this from Day 1, and anyone that joined in midway to watch my progress as well. This has been a blast and I hope it inspires some of you to start your own 31 Day Challenge in the future! ♥
We’re on the second to last day of the 31 Day Challenge! And today Cris, Sam and I are doing nails inspired by a tutorial. I chose to do a manicure that I’ve been wanting to recreate for months and months and months, the Splatter Manicure by Jen (a super-duper sweetheart!) from The PolishAholic! I’m pretty much head-over-heels in love with the way this turned out so let’s move right along to the pictures.
Day 30: Inspired By A Tutorial (Splatter Mani)
So I absolutely LOVE how this looks! The colors are so bright and cheerful. It honestly looks like I spent ages creating this abstract pattern on my nails when in reality I cranked this sucker out in 20 minutes.
I started out with three thin coats of China Glaze Sea Spray (light grey shimmer). Then once my base polish dried I went to town with my ‘splatter colors’: China Glaze Rodeo Fanatic (dark blue shimmer), Pure Ice Wild Thing (neon green creme), Finger Paints Tiffany Imposter (tiffany blue creme), and Sally Hanson Salon Orange You Cute! (red-orange coral creme). I topped it all off with a thick coat of Seche Vite.
What’s funny is that I didn’t even know I owned Wild Thing and Orange You Cute! until last week. I randomly found them in a storage basket in my room, they’d been hiding there for at least a year or two! It’s nice to know the polishes lasted this long after being neglected for so many years.
Some macro shots for you all, click on this last photo to view it at the original size. You can see the shimmer in the base polish (Sea Spray) much better. Next time I do a splatter mani I want to play around with the size of the straws that I use to see if it makes any difference in the resulting splatter patterns.
So yeah… Meet the newest member of the splatter mani fan club! It’s so fun and easy to do, expect to see a LOT more of these on the blog from now on. Come back tomorrow for the final day, I think it’s gonna be a great send-off for the challenge. Cris, Sammy and I have some fun things in store for Day 31.
We’re down to the final days of the 31 Day Challenge, I can’t believe it’s day 29 already! Today Cris, Sam and I are doing nails inspired by the supernatural. I remembered that I had bought a Halloween themed konad stamping plate (m13) but hadn’t gotten around to using it last month, so I figured it would be perfect for today’s look. ^_^
Day 29: Inspired By The Supernatural (Candy Skulls)
Hah! The manicure makes me giggle. I wanted to try to make sugar skulls with one of the stamps, so I used A England Guinevere, A England Galahad, and Essie’s Boat House for my little skull friends. Two coats of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear White On is the base. I then lightly sponged A England Perceval around each skull. And for my pinky I was messing around and layered China Glaze Poinsettia and A England Perceval ‘blood drips’ over Nails Inc. Trafalgar Square magnetic polish. I think this manicure is more silly than supernatural, but I kinda love it.
Some close-ups and macro shots of the stamping done for this mani. ^_^
And here’s bottle shots o f the polishes I used for stamping. I’m really starting to enjoy stamping nail art. Methinks it’s time I invested in some Bundle Monster plates…
Thanks for checking out my blog for another day of the challenge. There’s only two days left! I’ll see you all tomorrow for another lovely inspiration day. ^_^
Today is day 28 of the 31 Day Challenge and Cris, Sam and I are doing nails inspired by a flag. I chose to keep it simple with the flag of Japan. Not much else to say so I’ll just move onto the pictures. ^_^
Day 28: Inspired By A Flag
I wish I had a giant dotting tool so I could have made perfect circles. I used the biggest one I had but had to move it around to make the red dots as big as I wanted them to be. This is three coats of French White Creme by Wet N Wild and I created the dots with China Glaze Poinsettia.
Close-up of my ‘flags’. ^_^
And here’s a photo of the Japanese flag, courtesy of Wikipedia.
That’s it for day 28! This post is short and sweet. ♥
We’re at day 27 of the 31 Day Challenge, and it’s all about artwork today. I chose Kandinsky’s Squares with Concentric Circles as my art inspiration. I think I did a fairly good job representing the painting, but I’ll let you judge that for yourselves.
Day 27: Inspired By Artwork (Kandinsky’s Squares With Concentric Circles)
Here ya have it! I think I did a pretty good rendition of the painting on my nails. I was in “the zone” during this whole process. My roommate was laughing at me, she said that I was quietly mumbling/talking to myself as I rummaged through my polish stash to pick out the colors I wanted to use for this
piece project. Sounds about right. O_o
Here’s a picture of the original painting by Wassily Kandinsky. Can you tell which five circles I chose to represent on my nails?
Macro shots of each circle that I picked. I really enjoyed working on today’s challenge. It honestly felt like I was painting five tiny canvases. My pinky was my favorite, which nail/circle do you like the best?
My art palette. I used a LOT of different nail polishes to create this look today, including mixing several colors as I went along. I also used a small amount of red acrylic paint for my thumb.
Today is day 26 of the 31 Day Challenge and Cris, Sam and I are doing nails inspired by a pattern. I wasn’t super sure what I wanted to do for today, but eventually I decided on attempting the patchwork manicure created by the lovely Kayla Shevonne. I would like to emphasize the word “attempt” because I feel like my patchwork mani was a super mega fail compared to how gorgeous hers looks.
Maybe it was the colors I chose or the fact that it was my first time trying this look, but I just am not happy with the way this one turned out. But it’s 5am and it’s a little too late for me to redo it.
Day 26: Inspired By A Pattern
I picked colors from the 2010 Essie Winter collection: Going Incognito, Silken Cord and Hot Cocoa. Alone these polishes are GORGEOUS. Together in a manicure…. Not-So-Much. I just think the colors I chose make it look like a sad Christmas blanket.
Obligatory macro shot. I want to try this look again someday, I’m sure that if I practice it then I’ll eventually get better. My fine lines need some work.
That’s it for day 26. I feel like it’s a bit of a letdown, especially since I rocked the day 25 mani yesterday. Ah well, can’t win ‘em all. See you guys tomorrow for day 27!!
I can’t believe we’re at day 25 of the 31 Day Challenge, it’s going by so incredibly fast! Today’s nails are supposed to be inspired by fashion. My knowledge of fashion designers is rather limited so I was initially stumped on what to do for this manicure. Then my friend Jen showed me the “Baroque Angels” shoes by Alexander McQueen, and I knew what I had to do!
These are the shoes that inspired my manicure for today:
The detail on McQueen’s shoes is simply AMAZING! The nude toned base of the stockings is such a beautiful contrast to the silver-grey lace and the chromatic heels. I knew I had to try to make this into my mani for the day. Enough chit chat, it’s picture time! ♥
Day 25: Inspired By Fashion (Baroque Angels by Alexander McQueen)
I started out with two coats of Essie’s Brooch The Subject (beige nude creme) as my base polish and a thin coat of Seche Vite. I then took my m21 konad plate (yes, I finally have more than one stamping plate!! ) and used Pure Ice Kiss Me Here (grey creme) to stamp two separate images onto each nail. I stamped them close together so it would resemble the lace material on the heels. After that had dried I went back over each nail again with the m21 plate using China Glaze Millennium (platinum/chrome silver), slightly off center so I could create a bit of contrast. Finally, I took OPI’s Servin’ Up Sparkle and Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Celeb City to do some very light sponging around the side and tip of each nail. Then I slapped on a final layer of SV and I was good to go!
I’m extremely happy with the way these turned out. It was like transferring the idea I had in my head almost 100% onto my nails. I think that the only way I could have improved this was if I had access to rhinestones.
Here’s a few macro shots for your viewing pleasure. I really love the contrast between the three colors. And I really wish I owned those shoes! I would immediately roll my ankle trying to walk in them, but it’d be totally worth it.
Bottle shots of the polishes I used. ^_^
I really enjoyed creating this look for the challenge! I’m saddened by the fact that the designer Alexander McQueen is no longer with us, but his fashion legacy and beautiful works of art will live on forever. ♥
I apologize for the late post today. I’ve come down with a nasty cold this week and my energy levels have been quite low. We’re at day 24 of the 31 Day Challenge, and today’s manicure is inspired by a book. I chose one of my favorites, the 1999 novel Battle Royale by Koushun Takami. It’s about teenagers who are placed on a remote island and forced to fight to the death by their totalitarian government. It’s seriously an amazing book. Your heart goes out to all the characters and their individual stories, their struggle to survive, and the hard choices they have to make with the little time they have left (wiki/spoilers [HERE]). The book was also adapted into a manga, and an incredibly cheesy (but fun!) b-horror movie. If you’re a fan of dystopian novels (Brave New World, Hunger Games Trilogy, etc…) I would HIGHLY recommend this book. It’s over 600 pages long and I finished it in a day on my first read through. ♥
Day 24: Inspired By A Book (Battle Royale)
I took the male and female characters from the cover, the airplanes, and the little bomb above the author’s name for my nail art today. I also took the Battle Royale insignia from the movie and put it on my thumb. I only used two colors for this mani, China Glaze Poinsettia (review coming soon) and Sinful Colors Nail Art polish in Time Out.
Here’s some close-up shots of the nail art from the cover. ^_^
That’s it for day 24! Sorry I’m not as chatty in this post, I’ve been up all night and my brain is starting to power down. See you all tomorrow for day 25! Now go check out Cris and Sam’s blogs to see what book has inspired their nail art today. :-)
It’s the first day of November, and day 23 of the 31 Day Challenge I’m doing with Cris and Sam (don’t forget to check out what they did for today!). I can’t believe we’re almost done! Time certainly does fly. Today we’re supposed to show a look that was inspired by a movie. Since I created this manicure yesterday on Halloween I wanted it to be something that also suited the holiday spirit, and I’m also a HUGE fan of horror movies.
I picked the 2009 Halloween horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat as my movie inspiration (wiki entry/spoilers [HERE]). I based the manicure around one of the recurring characters, Sam (aka Samhain). He’s the spirit of Halloween and uses a lollipop sickle to er… “enforce” the rules of Halloween throughout the movie. If you’re a fan of horror movies, especially anthologies, I would highly recommend this one. I love all of the stories that are told and how well they are interwoven with each other. ♥
Day 23: Inspired By A Movie (Trick ‘r Treat)
Even though I’m fighting off the beginning of a nasty cold I really had fun with this manicure. I started out with a coat of Black Creme by Wet n Wild. I then took Very Structured by Essie and added a little bit of black to it to darken it, I sponged that mixture onto my nails. I then kept adding more of Very Structured back into my dark brown polish mixture and used the resulting colors to create a gradient that went from black to medium brown.
After that dried I used acrylic paints to create Sam, his lollipop sickle, and the trick ‘r treat words to my nails. Acrylics are going to take some trial and error before I get better with them. This was my first time ever using them and I think I did about as good as I’m going to for a first attempt.
Here’s the Trick ‘r Treat movie poster that I used for my inspiration. Poor Sammy, he’s just a poor misunderstood pumpkin/demon/monster/child/thing.
Close-up shot of Sam’s noggin.
I wish I could have made the lettering more well-defined. I think I just need to find the right combo of art brushes and get used to working with acrylics more. I also goofed on the letter ‘a’, it should be a capital ‘A’ like in the poster. But at that point I didn’t want to do the entire nail over again.
Macro shot of Sam’s lollipop sickle that’s on my pinky. ^_^
And one more shot of the completed manicure with flash. I love how the orange just *POPS* right out of the screen.
Well that’s it for day 23! It’s a bit of an obscure movie, but I really enjoyed it. And heck, even if you don’t get the movie reference it’s at least a fun Halloween theme mani anyway.
