Happy Sunday Everyone!!
Today I’m back with Sam and Cris for Day 3 of the 31 Day Challenge 2012 with our yellow nails! Yellow is one of my absolute favorite nail polish colors so I had a lot of fun trying to come up with what to do. Now that I think about it, I should have done yellow cupcakes or something since today is my birthday. Ah well, hindsight and such.
And once again I’m typing this in the middle of the night so let’s keep my intro short and sweet.
31DC2012 Day 3 – Candy Stripe Yellow Nails
May I present to you, mah candy nails! Well, I think they look like candy anyway. I started off with 1 coat of Finger Paints Catwalk Queen, a murky mustard yellow creme. Catwalk Queen is one of my favorite yellows, and I love that it’s usually a one coater for me. My bottle of it has turned some scary brownish orange color but the polish itself still looks the same. O.o
Then I used a medium-sized striping brush and added Cult Nails Feel Me Up (a daffodil yellow crelly), Catrice Sunny Side (a gorgeous yellow shimmer, thanks again Andrea!), and Essence Mellow Yellow (a pale yellow creme).
And theeeeeeeennn I decided that I wanted to use my A48 nail plate some more. This is the same nail plate that has the koi fish on it that I used for my Day 2 nails. It had this patchwork stitch pattern on it that I thought was super cute and I think it looks pretty awesome with the different yellows in this manicure.
I used Milani White on White (surprise, surprise…) for the stamping. I think this nail plate and I have a lot of fun stamping in our future.
P.S. Anyone watching the season 3 premiere of The Walking Dead tonight!! I know I am and I cannot wait to see Michonne in the flesh!!
I apologize for my latest blogging absence! This is my last month of my apprenticeship at the salon so it’s crunch time with time trials and mock state boards. NO PRESSURE. Add on to this my regular 40 hours at the night shift job and I am just BEAT. I’ve still been polishing my nails and posting quick NOTD’s on Instagram, but sitting down and editing/writing a full post just hasn’t been happening. Every time I think about wanting to post, I just end up going to bed instead.
I’ll get through this slump folks, please hang in there! ♥
So for now I’ll just post some of my latest Instagram updates to share with you all while I get through my blogging drought.
Om Nom Noms At The Portside Inn
I did have a break from the madness to enjoy a nice lunch at one of my favorite places to eat in town. This amazingness is from a restaurant called the Portside Inn. They have the best french onion soup. EVER. But since it was 85 degrees out I decided not the get the soup this time. Instead I got The Edmund, which is their delicious reuben sandwich (something I always order no matter what). The manfriend and I split some bruschetta and I had a white sangria, sooooo nummy!
Back To Squovals
I gave the roundies a good ‘ole try, but the squovals are back and here to stay folks! I missed them so much, and I just could not get the rounded nails up to my level of perfection. I decided to do something simple with my nails here, so I did a jelly sandwich with OPI Pirouette My Whistle and My Pointe Exactly.
China Glaze Gradient!
I found the China Glaze On Safari Collection polishes you guys!! I was so pumped that they arrived at my local pro shop. I bought 6 of them from the collection and I hope to have time to swatch them soon! For now I just did a gradient with Exotic Encounters and Man Hunt. I don’t know why my fingers look so zombified in the close-up shot, I blame my iPhone.
I added square gold studs from Cult Nails as an accent. The studs are nice but kinda HUGE on my tiny narrow nails. I had to add 2 coats of Gelous and a thick coat of top coat to get them to be smooth with my nail since the edges were floating in the air.
Here’s a quick snapshot of the 6 polishes that I picked up from the On Safari collection.
From left to right: Jungle Queen, Elephant Walk, Exotic Encounters, Kalahari Kiss, Desert Sun and Man Hunt.
I’m curious to see how similar Jungle Queen is to Revlon Perplex (or Naughty after the recent rename).
Anyone spot my cross-sitched Nyan-Cat in the background? It was made by my awesome pal Anne-Marie. Check out her Etsy shop, SheWithNeedles. She did a few other kick-ass custom projects for me too. ^_^
OPI Spotted and Zoya Gradient – No Filter
I know I just posted my OPI Spotted and Zoya Tracie/Wednesday gradient a week ago, but it seemed like people complained about the Instagram filter throwing off the color. Here’s a non-filtered photo for you all. I honestly don’t think the color in the previous one was off by that much, but ah well!
Glix Polish Haul!
I got my first order from Glix/Glitrix on Etsy and I can’t wait to try them out! I’ve seen a few of her franken polishes posted here and there and I decided to take the plunge. I know the star-shaped bottles are gonna be a pain, but the minis are so stinkin’ cute!
And just for shiggles (thank you Cris for that term, lmao!) I decided to throw in a few kitty pics since it’s been a while. Here’s Clarence and
Saucer Eyes McGee Chauncey being preoccupied by something behind me. Probably a ghost. Or scary fireworks. These things happen.
And one more picture of Chauncey hanging out with one of our favorite people, the manfriend. He’s wearing one of my favorite shirts. I love the random white pirate cat, you can see a bit of its eye patch. And yes, one of the other t-shirt cats has a cigarette. Don’t smoke kids. Stay in school.
That’s it for this installment of Rie’s Randomness™. Thank you all again for your patience and I hope to be back soon with some real swatches for y’all soon!
Just got back from seeing The Hunger Games and overall I really enjoyed it! They made a few changes that didn’t thrill me (the mutts and PG-13 rating), but that’s to be expected with a book adaption. Anyway, why don’t you all head on over to Fashion Polish to check out the awesome konadicure that I did for Sam! You can view it by clicking on the photo above or by using this link right [HERE]!

I’ve got the newest addition to my Cult Nails family to share with you today, Toxic Seaweed! I’d been patiently awaiting the release of this gorgeous polish ever since Maria started posting glimpses of it on the Cult Nails Facebook page, and as soon as midnight struck on its release date I snatched up a bottle immediately!
I used the Cult Nails base coat/top coat combo (Get It On/Wicked Fast) for all swatches shown today.
Cult Nails Toxic Seaweed
Toxic Seaweed is a murky kelp green jelly that’s filled with all sorts of good stuff. There’s red/gold flakies, and tons of glitter that gives it that ‘glowing from within’ look. I know I’ve said it before, but I’m so in love with this polish! It has a thick suspension base but I still used 3 coats here, there’s just a hint of VNL but nothing too major.
Although next time I’ll layer it over a similar green polish in order to save product. Toxic Seaweed is made from similar ingredients that were in the late and great Unicorn Puke, so it’s a limited edition polish. Once it’s gone, there’s no comin’ back.
Here’s a macro shot for you all, you really need to blow this one up to see all the detail in Toxic Seaweed. So very pretty. *le swoon*
I don’t really have too much else to add to this section that I haven’t already said before. This polish rocks, I love the combination of flakies and glitter, and the deep green is to die for! It’s a little on the stinky side but it’s not gonna knock you out, just don’t put your face right up to the bottle and you’ll be fine.
Cult Nails polishes are B3-Free, vegan friendly and cruelty free. They’re also free of phthalate or camphor. Toxic Seaweed is part of the Let’s Get Nekkid! Collection and is the only limited edition polish in the bunch, so grab it while you still can folks! You can purchase them from the Cult Nails website, or OverallBeauty.com. Retail price is $10.00/ea per 0.5oz bottle of polish.
I’m sorry my blog has been so bare the past few weeks. I’ve got a big test coming up on Saturday on sanitation, anatomy and physiology so I’ve been putting most of my free time into note taking, cursing under my breath, and studying. I took a study break at the salon on Thursday and decided to try a technique that I saw on Pinterest the other day, a super cute Valentine’s Day color block manicure!
I definitely think there’s room for improvement in my execution of the technique, but overall I’m really quite pleased at the way it turned out. The salon manager took one look at my nails after I was done and just started beaming at me. I think I’ve found my calling y’all.
Color Block Manicure Using OPI & Cult Nails
I started off with 2 coats of Did It On ‘Em by OPI, then used the reinforcement stickers to section off my nail before I layered OPI’s Fly over the top. I should have wrapped my edges better thought because the Seche Vite I used between layers caused a little bit of shrinkage.
I finished the manicure off with a coat of Toxic Seaweed by Cult Nails. This polish you guys… OMG. I’m really hoping I have some time to swatch later today because I want to show you all how awesome this polish is!
You can see a bit of a polish bleed on my ring finger, but in general I think this turned out to be pretty neat for my first attempt! I love the combination of colors because greens and blues are a few of my favorite things. ♥
I’ll definitely be using 1-coat polishes next time though because waiting between layers for the polish to dry took FOR-EHHH-VER.
Say it like the scene in The Sandlot, you know you did already.
That’s all I have for you all today, I have to get back to the grind with this textbook. *whimpers* Everyone keeps telling me that this is the worst part, and once I’m past this it’s all gravy. I really hope so because having to remember words like ‘sternocleidomastoid’ makes me sad.
Sorry for my absence this week, my days off were pretty hectic and I could hardly find time to paint my nails or blog for that matter! And Wednesday I chose to participate in the web-wide Blackout to protest SOPA/PIPA, both bills which could spell the end for beauty bloggers like myself and others. If you’re still confused on what these two bills are, you can find out more info and sign the petition to stop them in their tracks [HERE].
I come back offering you one of my NOTD looks from last week, watercolor nails! After seeing the great manis done by Sarah from Chalkboard Nails and Rebecca from Rebecca Likes Nails I just had to try this technique for myself! Also, why does Blogger auto load to the bottom of the page now? Annoying.
But I digress, let’s get to the pictures shall we?
Sally Hansen – White On (base color)
China Glaze – Poinsettia
Finger Paints – Curdor-Orange
Cult Nails – Feel Me Up
Sally Hansen – Thinking of Blue
At first I wasn’t sure if I liked the way my watercolor manicure had turned out. But the more I looked at it the more I ended up really liking it. Though next time I want to use brighter colors because I think the blue I used is a little overpowering.
This mani reminds me of a Monet painting, especially my ring finger! This look was relatively easy to create. Though it can be easy to eat straight through the top coat with the acetone if you linger in one spot for too long. You can view/read tutorials on how to create this look on both Sarah and Rebecca’s posts that I linked at the top of the page. ^_^
That’s it for today! I also entered this manicure into the Cult Nails Nail Art contest. You can view it on their Facebook Fan Page and vote for yours truly if the mood strikes you.
I’ve got a very special polish by Cult Nails to share with you today. This is Cult Nails Feel Me Up, one of the three limited edition polishes Maria made available during her Black Friday sale last year (it still feels strange to say “last year”…). I’m a yellow polish lover so as soon as I saw this little beauty I pounced!
I used Wicked Fast Top Coat and Get It On Base Coat by Cult Nails for my swatches today.
Cult Nails – Feel Me Up
Feel Me Up is a perfect shade of warm daffodil yellow, and the formula is superb! Most yellows have a tendency to be chalky, streaky, and generally a hot mess to apply. Feel Me Up has my favorite formula, the oh-so-wonderful jelly-creme hybrid.
The first coat went on a tad streaky, but that was all corrected by coat number 2. I ended up using 3 coats here to reach the level of opacity I like.
Feel Me Up is currently sold out, but I know Maria mentioned on her blog that she plans to bring it back some time in the future. I’m hoping so cause I think I’ll need a backup for this one!
In other most excellent Cult Nails news, they are offering free shipping (with no minimum purchase) to anyone, anywhere through Saturday, January 14th in celebration of the 1 year anniversary of their launch day! Check out the shop [HERE]. This is music to a Culties ears.
I am oh-so-very excited to be showing you all Revlon Whimsical today! As soon as I heard about this polish I knew it had to be mine ASAP. The lacquerhead buzz is strong for this one. It’s a near [or 100%] dead on dupe for Deborah Lippmann’s Glitter In The Air (aka GITA), which I’ve always wanted but couldn’t bring myself to drop the $18 for a bottle of it. I can’t directly compare the two because I don’t own the Deborah Lippmann polish, but Solveig from Nailin’ It! has a great swatch of GITA on her blog [HERE].
I have to thank my girl Jacqui for getting her hands on this one for me. I owe her a hug, a squeal, and cookies for tracking this down for me. This polish has my heart! Right now I think people are having the best luck locating this polish at K-Mart and Bed, Bath & Beyond stores. But I believe Revlon may be adding Whimsical to their permanent collection! *fingers crossed, mama needs a backup!*
Enough of my rambling, let’s get to the good stuff! I changed it up a bit today and used Cult Nails Get It On Perfecting Base Coat and Wicked Fast Speed Dry Top Coat for my swatches, both of which I’m looooooving so far! Clicking each image will bring you to the originally sized photo on my Flickr page.
So really, how could you look at this polish and NOT be in love instantly?! You remember the intense lemming that I had for DL Glitter In The Air? Well say good-bye because Revlon KILLLLLLED IT when they made Whimsical!
Whimsical is extremely sheer and definitely more suited for layering. It has a translucent blue base that’s filled with sparse baby blue and pink hex glitter. There’s also smaller pink hex glitter pieces and even tinier iridescent blue glitter spread throughout. For this look I layered 2 coats of Whimsical over 2 coats of Zoya’s Kristen (the blue/grey creme from their Feel Collection, review/swatches soon!). You’ll definitely have to let Whimsical dry for a minute or two between layers though, the glitter has a tendency to drag.
Here’s a macro shot of Whimsical on my current nubbins. I love the iridescent glitter that’s peeking through. I can’t wait to layer this over… EVERYTHING. ಠ_ಠ
Winter has not been kind and my nails have been peeling like crazy. I went file/clipper happy and took ‘em down to the meat to try to grow them out healthy again. I blame Loodie for my excessive use of the term “meat” lately.
So far I’ve been wearing Whimsical for 3 days and it’s wearing like iron! I’m not sure if it’s the polish or the base coat/top coat combo I’m using but either way I’m impressed! I even took an hour long LUSH bubble bath yesterday and I have no chips or tip wear whatsoever!
Has anyone else been able to find Whimsical yet? What are you layering it with? ♥
This whole “posting what I want without a schedule and theme” is going to take some getting used to, haha! I’m still coming down from the 31 Day Challenge high so bear with me here.
To get back into the swing of things I did a mini vote on Twitter last night to see what everyone wanted to see for my first day of regular swatching. The response for Cult Nails Unicorn Puke was overwhelming! So here you have it folks, I’ll warn you now that this is picture heavy. It’s time to meet the new multi-colored flakie love of my life. Trust me when I say that you’re gonna want to enlarge every single image:-D
Sally Hansen Nail Quencher Hydrating Base Coat and Seche Vite Top Coat were used for all swatches shown today.
Left to Right ♥:
Pointer Finger – 4 coats of Unicorn Puke by itself
Middle Finger – 2 coats of Unicorn Puke over 1 coat of China Glaze Let’s Groove
Ring Finger – 2 coats of Unicorn Puke over 1 coat of Jessie’s Girl Blue Moon
Pinky Finger – 2 coats of Unicorn Puke over 1 coat of Wet n Wild Black Creme
I have to say that Unicorn Puke layered over black is my favorite way to wear the polish, it reminds me SO much of black opal! My second favorite layering is Unicorn Puke over blue. This polish is so incredibly versatile that I’m sure I’ll discover many more ways to layer it. I should get some drool cloths ready in advance.
Unicorn Puke is a limited edition release from Cult Nails, this is bottle 233 of 275. It’s being re-released with the rest of the Super Powers Winter 2011 collection some time in December under the name ‘Clairvoyant‘. The only difference between Unicorn Puke and Clairvoyant is the name change and the gold lettering on the LE release, so you’ll still be getting the same polish.
And now it’s time for ‘Macroooo Maniaaaaaa’!!! This is 4 coats of Unicorn Puke by itself. You can clearly see the purple jelly base and the gorgeous orange, green, red, blue, fuchsia and purple flakies. There is just so much going on, I love it!
Here’s a macro of 2 coats of Unicorn Puke over 1 coat of China Glaze Let’s Groove.
2 coats of Unicorn Puke over 1 coat of Jessie’s Girl Blue Moon. I really love how this looks over blue. ^_^
2 coats of Unicorn Puke over 1 coat of Wet n Wild Black Creme, my favorite way to wear it. Seriously, google some images of black opal and tell me this doesn’t resemble it.
And lastly, a picture of the label. No real reason for this other than me being forever amused by the name of the polish.
I cannot express in words how much I friggin’ love this polish! If you missed out on your chance to get Unicorn Puke there’s still hope! Cult Nails is running their pre-sale for two more days (right [HERE] through Nov. 11th), and you can buy all four polishes in the collection (Clairvoyant, Mind Control, Time Traveler and Power Thief) for $30. That’s 25% off the regular price for purchasing the collection when it’s officially released next month!
I definitely plan on buying the other three polishes when they’re released and you can bet I’ll post my review here. What can I say, I love the cult.
I hope everyone is having a good Monday so far, I have today off so I’m having a great day already! I have a few errands to run, but then I’ll be spending the rest of my afternoon swatching and having a Supernatural marathon of season 6. ^_^ Supernatural is one of my favorite shows, so I’m catching up on the previous season before I see what happens in season 7.
Last but certainly not least, we’re at part 3 of my Cult Nails Hypnotic collection swatches (you can see Part 1 [HERE] and Part 2 [HERE]). Today we’re looking at In A Trance, I think this one might be my favorite out of the four polishes. Keep reading and you’ll quickly see why.
I used Sally Hansen Nail Quencher Hydrating base coat for each of today’s’ swatches. Clicking the images will bring you to the original sized photos.
In A Trance
In A Trance is an absolutely gorgeous olive green polish with a golden shimmer. As Nicole said to me the other day, this is such a ME color. I could probably live with only painting my nails with olive green and seafoam hued polishes forever. This polish was a breeze to work with, the formula was very smooth and spreadable. I used two coats.
Here’s a macro shot. I love that the golden micro-shimmer stays visible no matter what type of lighting you’re in. Click this baby for some ultimate eye-candy. ^_^
In A Trance + Hypnotize Me
Here’s one coat of Hypnotize Me layered over two coats of In A Trance, I did use Seche Vite top coat because Hypnotize Me dries dull. You can read a more full review of Hypnotize Me on Part 1 of my Hypnotic collection posts. This layering combo didn’t really do much for me, the contrast of green on top of green left me feeling meh.
Here’s the macro shot on this one. I honestly think that In A Trance is too pretty to be layered with anything else.
I really enjoyed the entire Hypnotic collection, but for me the stand out color is In A Trance (green lover here, I’m a little biased ). It’s a tie for second place with Awakening and Enigmatic, I honestly can’t decide which of the two I love more! The formula on the three I just mentioned was fantastic, smooth and buttery. The only one I can’t see everyone loving is Hypnotize Me, especially if you’re not a fan of thick glitter polishes.
Cult Nails polishes are B3-Free, vegan friendly and cruelty free. They’re also free of phthalate or camphor. You can purchase them from the Cult Nails website, or OverallBeauty.com. Retail price is $10.00/ea per 0.5oz bottle of polish.
